3 minutes to read

An enlarged prostate, known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, is common as we age, and it can cause urinary symptoms that include increased urgency and frequency. These symptoms can put a damper on your social life and make it tough to hit the road.

Thanks to a handful of helpful locator apps, men who feel uncomfortable heading out of the house for fear of a bathroom emergency can now relax knowing they won't have to search high and low for the next men's room.

Check out these bathroom finding phone apps to make your next need to go a breeze.

ToiletFinder is a simple app that uses location services to find the nearest toilet.

You can choose to search only for free toilets or those with disabled access, and you can choose the location type, such as public restrooms, gas stations, bars, restaurants, and more. A map displays the location, and the address is provided.

This app gets 4.3 out of 5 stars from 3,113 reviewers and has more than 500,000 installs.

Bathroom Scout

A database of around two million bathrooms powers this app, which helps you find public toilets and bathrooms in surrounding stores, restaurants, and other places.

The app displays the location on a map and offers turn-by-turn navigation to the toilet. You can even check the surrounding area for sketchiness using Google Street View. This app earns 3.7 stars from 809 users and has more than 100,000 installs.

Flush is a crowdsourced bathroom-finding app with a slick interface and a database of over 200,000 bathrooms worldwide and counting.

Flush features a direction button that you can press to instantly receive directions to the nearest toilet and get information about it, such as whether it's free, accessible, or requires a key. Even if you have no Internet connection, you can still type in your location and get directions to the nearest bathroom in the database.

This app gets 3.5 stars from 1,753 reviewers and has more than 100,000 installs.

Tips for Reducing Urinary Urgency and Frequency

While severe urinary symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate may require medication or surgery, mild to moderate symptoms can typically be managed with a number of strategies and lifestyle changes. Here are some ways to reduce the urinary discomforts so that you can take your sweet time finding a bathroom.

Research shows that men with BPH who walk three times a week show significantly improved urinary symptoms.

If you feel like you still need to go after you've already gone, try double-voiding. Urinate, then wait a few minutes, and go again.

Lose weight.

Carrying around extra weight can worsen symptoms of BPH. Losing weight helps improve bladder function and control.

Do Kegels.

Kegel exercises can help you better control your bladder and empty it completely. Contract the muscle that stops your urine flow, and hold it for 10 seconds. Repeat ten times. Perform Kegels three times a day for the best results.
